British, 1931 - 2002

Anthony Benjamin was born in Boarhunt in Hampshire and studied engineering at Southall Technical College. In 1951 he went to Paris where he worked with Léger for one year. On his return to London he studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic, winning a silver medal for painting. In 1957 he won a French scholarship for Painting and Printmaking enabling him to study with SW Hayter in Paris. He held teaching posts at many universities and colleges of art and spent some time in Canada and the USA, as Professor of Art at the University of Calgary, York University in Toronto, Ontario College of Art and Hayward State College in California. Benjamin was a gifted and talented draughtsman from his engineering days, and prolific printmaker, producing his own work, and through his Hope (Sufferance) Press, that of others.
